Roadtrip Rivals is an online board game about connecting places, planning routes, and seeing where the map takes you. Every board is built from a real geographical area, so each game starts with a different set of cities, roads, and choices - no two games are ever the same!
How it started
In 2021, we began experimenting with algorithms that could create game boards from geographical areas. At first, it was simply a way to combine a few things we enjoy: board games, maps, and difficult little programming problems. Over time, those experiments became the foundation for Roadtrip Rivals.
We wanted boards to stay interesting without relying on a fixed collection of maps. The result is a game where the landscape changes, but the familiar question remains: how do you build the best roadtrip from what is in front of you?
Exploring the world
The game is easy to pick up, but each board asks for its own approach. You can play for the strategy, for the friendly competition, or simply because you enjoy recognising places and learning how different parts of the world fit together. The Featured Board is our small way of bringing a new region into focus each week!
About the team
Roadtrip Rivals is built by two study friends with a shared interest in board games, topography, mathematical optimisation, artificial intelligence, and well-made interfaces. We enjoy the process as much as the result: the puzzles to solve, the techniques to learn, and the conversations with players who have supported the project from the start!
